Working with Children

boyAbuse & Protection: Protecting kids is our biggest concern and preventing child abuse should be everyone’s concern. If you’ve ever thought that the problem is just too big for you to do anything about it, think again. Child abuse is 100% preventable, but only with the support of strong families and communities. We work with local authorities to put predators behind bars. We work with kids to bring some normalcy in their lives. In your community you can help to strengthen families and make a difference in the life of a child. Every small effort can bring big rewards and will make a difference in the quality of life in your community. We also encourage you to talk to your senators and congressmen to enforce strict laws to keep child predators behind bars.

ChildTerminally ill: There are millions of terminally ill kids who are fighting a battle of life and death on daily basis. We like getting to know who these kids are and getting to know someone is hard work. It takes time and persistence. Knowing someone means discovering new things about what they like and dislike. It means learning what pleases them and angers them. It means finding out what their priorities are—what really matters to them. Our goal is to bring a smile to their faces. We often work with local organizations to arrange "Fun" days for these children.

Orphans or Foster Kids: We encourage adoptions. We often work with local orphanages and organizations to offer these children an equal opportunity to learn and grow in a healthy environment by offering them mentoring sessions. We often work with local organizations to arrange "Fun" days for these children.

Child LaborChild Labor: Child labor is the employment of children under an age determined by law or custom. We consider this practice exploitative as do many countries and international organizations. Child labor can include factory work, mining or quarrying, agriculture or streets however, rather than in factories and sweatshops, most child labor occurs in the informal sector, "selling on the street, at work in agriculture or hidden away in houses — far from the reach of official labor inspectors and from media scrutiny." The most controversial forms of work include the military use of children as well as child prostitution. We are working diligently to raise awareness to these issues and joining hands with International organizations in Pakistan & India (and other countries) where child labor has become an accepted part of the culture.

Child Poverty: 300 Million children go to bed hungry every night. Poverty kills 21 children each minute. Millions of children today have no access to basic services such as clean water, health care, schools and hospitalsHomeless Kid.Whether they live in big cities or rural villages, these children miss out on their childhood. They never have time to grow, learn, play and feel safe. Every day children die because of child poverty and unavailability of their basic rights. What can we do to stop the death of thousands of children and to destroy the demon of child poverty? We can start with looking in our own backyard. Desi Attitude is focused on spreading awareness of child poverty. We hope that the younger generation will understand the need of eradicating child poverty globally and do their part in the fight to end it. We work with International organizations to raise awareness and believe that by educating people about the realities of child poverty, one day, we will be able to end it.

Poverty

HomelessHomeless: How many people are homeless? There is no easy answer to this question and, in fact, the
question itself is misleading. In most cases, homelessness is a temporary circumstance -- not a
permanent condition. A more appropriate measure of the magnitude of homelessness is the
number of people who experience homelessness over time, not the number of "homeless people." According to the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty there are approximately 3.5 million people, 1.35 million of them children, are likely to experience homelessness in a given year. Up to 800,000 people are homeless on any given night.

This initiative was inspired by an Oprah story on people living the suburbs of Chicago in very poor conditions and without the basic necessities of life. We want to make resources available for these people so they can get their lives back on track. We want to inspire homeless to get back on their feet, whether its planting a seed, giving them hope, education, employment or helping them put food on the table. We often work with local organization and conduct "Weekend with Homeless" projects.

Overseas Initiatives: Poverty is a global problem. Our hope is to work with international and local organizations and support them in ways to fight this very serious issue. Once the DA has a solid structure in place, we will begin our initiatives by focusing on poverty in Pakistan and India.

Empowering Women

WomanSexual Abuse & Assault : DA provides assistance to adult and adolescent victims of child sexual abuse and sexual trauma. We help victims become survivors and create accurate public awareness of the prevalence of sexual abuse, its impact, and ways in which it can be prevented or stopped through educational programs. We work with local organizations and arrange "coaching days" for these victims. We also work with victims who are trying to put their lives back together.

Prostitution: The National Task Force on Prostitution suggests that over one million people in the US have worked as prostitutes in the United States, or about 1% of American women. The U.S. Department of Health consistently reports that 3-5% of the sexually transmitted disease in this country is related to prostitution (compared with 30-35% among teenagers). There is no statistical indication in the U.S. that prostitutes are vectors of HIV. Although a fair percentage of prostitutes may be HIV positive. DA works with local organizations to provide other alternatives to these men and women and helps to put their lives back on track.

Literacy

ChildrenLiteracy in South Asia: In a developing nation like Pakistan and India, children are being ignored and don't easily receive the basic necessities of life. For people who somehow overcome this hurdle, no proper facility of health and education is provided. Our goal is to reach out to them, one child at a time and make sure they are getting the proper education and resources to build their lives. The inspiration for this initiative was a documentary called "Born into Brothels" in which a photographer inspired children who were born in Indian brothels to break the barriers of poverty and educate themselves.

In addition, In countries like India and Pakistan, child labor is a huge challenge. Our hope is to eliminate child labor by introducing academic initiatives, one child at a time. Our goal is to work with local organizations in these countries to educate children.

Music & Arts

danceFun Days: We support arts, dance, cultural and music education. We arrange "Fun Days" to showcase variety of cultural performances to promote diversity and unity.

Music & Dance Workshops: We arrange music and dance workshops to teach dances from around the world to disadvantaged children and adults. We also promote music education and its many benefits through the donation and repair of musical instruments to under-served schools, community music programs and individual students nationwide. This Hi-5 cause was inspired by Oprah's story on inner city kids and their desire to learn music. DJ Desi enhanced the idea by adding dancing and arts initiatives with the commitment to the future of music education.

Art Workshops: We arrange art workshops and exhibitions to feature art by homeless, disadvantaged and terminally ill children and adults. The money raise by selling the art work goes back to these artists.
